“Doesn’t it seem to you,” asked Madame Bovary, “that the mind
moves more freely in the presence of that boundless expanse,
that the sight of it elevates the soul and gives rise
to thoughts of the infinite and the ideal?”
~ Gustave Flaubert, Madame Bovary,
speaking of the ocean
Hello, all my lovely writers and readers,
Scroll on down for a bonus, ocean-inspired prompt!
I wanted to be sure you knew that there are still a few spots left in the Coastal Writing Retreat I'm hosting at Sunset Beach, North Carolina, the first weekend in March.
If you'd love (and are able) to come away to the beach to write and commune with other writers, this is your chance, as the next retreat won't take place until November. March is a wonderful time to come to one of the ten beaches Yahoo travel says is even better in the
off-season. I agree! Here's a photo from one of my off-season sunrise walks.
Want to take advantage of one of the open spots? If so, here's what you need to know:
WHERE: The Sunset Inn, 9 North Shore Dr., Sunset Beach, NC 28468
WHEN: March 4th - 6th, 2022
Reconnect with your own creativity, whether you are a practicing writer, closet writer, or as-yet-to-pick-up-the-pen writer! The techniques and prompts we’ll use will spur your imagination, and can be used to create nonfiction, fiction, and/or poetry—the choice is yours.
Give yourself time to write in community with others who love words and ideas, and time for solitude, too. There’ll be ample free time to savor your beautifully appointed private room at The Sunset Inn, with king-sized bed, private bath and balcony, and the coastal setting the Sunset Inn provides. You’ll return home refreshed, with new ideas and energy for your writing — and your life.
TO REGISTER: Please call The Sunset Inn at 1-888-575-1001 to reserve your spot. (Bonus: 50% off Sunday evening lodging if you would like to stay an extra night)

WordPlay Now! Bonus Writing Prompt
Read these words about water by Raymond
Carver:
Where Water Comes Together with Other Water
I love creeks and the music they make.
And rills, in glades and meadows, before
they have a chance to become creeks.
I may even love them best of all
for their secrecy. I almost forgot
to say something about the source!
Can anything be more wonderful than a spring?
But the big streams have my heart too.
And the places streams flow into rivers.
The open mouths of rivers where they join the sea.
The places where water comes together
with other water. Those places stand out
in my mind like holy places....
~ Raymond Carver
(You can read "Where Water Comes Together
with Other Water" in its entirety here.)
Now, set a timer for fifteen minutes and write about water, whether it's a tribute to a particular body of water that is important to you/one of your characters (as Sunset Beach is to me), or a litany to places "where water comes together with other water," or a celebration of streams, ponds,
waterfalls...
Or just include a body of water in a scene, story, essay, or poem.
