Dear
,

Whew... what a month it's been! May brought... well, the whole, "happy enchilada" of experiences.

"Happy enchilada?" you might well ask. (This week's word is inspired by singer-songwriter John Prine; read on!)

I'll be sharing some of my "enchilada" escapades with you soon, but I want to get this zine out now so you can come "Write Yourself" tomorrow night if you are so inclined.

And why might you be? Here are six good reasons to come to this workshop near downtown Charlotte where you'll write, write, write:

6. Remember when writing flowed and words were fun?
("Yes" and "no" answers both lead to "You'll love it.")

5. No pressure, no required word count
4. Delicious passages of poetry and prose
3.
Great WordPlaymates to write with
2. An energy infusion for your inner writer
1. Fun, easy take-home tools so you can keep your writing flowing

Want to come? Just
register via PayPal or credit card with this link: Write Yourself on May 30th

Or shoot me an email at info@wordplaynow.com to let me know you'll be there and you can pay in person.

Either way, I'll send you details and directions and see you then!

I so hope you can join me! If tomorrow doesn't work, there are two more opportunities. Or you can come to two or even all three of the sessions...

And if you're not in the Charlotte area and you're interested, shoot me an email at info@wordplaynow.com. If there's enough interest, I'll create an online version just for you!

Now, about that "happy enchilada."  Well, you'll understand once you watch this video of singer-songwriter John Prine singing a song I've loved for decades called "That's the Way That the World Goes 'Round." You can view it here.

Along about minute 2:26, John tells this very funny story about how he discovered, when he was a kid reading lyrics to songs he listened to, that "Sometimes they weren't singing the words I thought they were singing."

And how disappointed he was that this future was just not meant to be: "When I grow up, I'm going to go to New Orleans and get some 'grumble-y beans."

And how he got asked once, "Hey, John, play that song for me -- you know, the one about the enchilada, the happy enchilada..." and how he thought she had maybe confused him with Jimmy Buffet and, well, just watch the video!)

And do read on for more WordPlay, including a prompt you can do right now...

Wishing you the whole, happy enchilada,

Maureen

A sneak peek into the whole, "happy enchilada" of my May -- I'm keeping my grandson, Rhys, until the end of the school year now that my daughter's maternity leave from her job teaching English at South Meck High is over.
He's a joy of a boy!

WordPlay Now! Writing Prompt

This is WordPlay -- so why not revel in the power and potential of one good word after another? This week, it's "enchilada."

If you watched John Prine's video, you heard about the file cabinet where he keeps words he'll never use in a song, including "enchilada." And you probably noticed that the word "enchilada"
is a pretty funny word, even without the story, and that while John didn't use it in a song, he sure used it in a story! Your WordPlay Now Prompt is to write a poem, story, essay, or scene that features the word "enchilada." Feel free to write about "the whole enchilada," a "happy enchilada"that made "you think you were gonna drown" (watch the video now if this makes no sense to you!), or even an actual enchilada....

Want to be featured in a future Word-zine?

Send in a piece of your writing that you think could inspire other WordPlayers to write. 500-word limit, please.) You can send something inspired by this writing, or anything else of your choosing. Email your words to WordPlay here and your piece may be chosen for a future Word-zine.

MAUREEN RYAN GRIFFIN, an award-winning poetry and nonfiction writer, is the author of Spinning Words into Gold, a Hands-On Guide to the Craft of Writing, a grief workbook entitled I Will Never Forget You, and two collections of poetry, This Scatter of Blossoms and When the Leaves Are in the Water. She believes, as author Julia Cameron says, "We are meant to midwife dreams for one another."

Maureen also believes that serious "word work" requires serious WordPlay, as play is how we humans best learn -- and perform. What she loves best is witnessing all the other dreams that come true for her clients along the way. Language, when used with intentionality and focus, is, after all, serious fuel for joy. Here's to yours!
