Volume VIII, Issue 25
July 1, 2019
Dear ,
Greetings from Chautauqua Institution, where marvel follows marvel. It seems the perfect time to invite you to consider the marvel that YOU are, and to allow yourself to marvel at the beauty in the people, and the world, around you.
I had a marvel moment yesterday when Jane Metzger, one of my Chautauqua writing students from a number of years ago, stopped by where I was sitting to share information about this week's class to say hi. And to tell me that she reads the zine each Monday, and loves being introduced to new (to her) writers.
That made my day! A kind fellow instructor took our photo together so I could share it with you.
Today's writing (and subject line) is by cellist Pablo Casals, who made so many of us marvel! And while I don't know if he was ever at Chautauqua, a cellist I'll get to hear play
here later this summer, Inbal Segev, as won a top prize at a Pablo Casals International Competition.
Speaking of music, the Chautauqua Youth Symphony is playing soon, so I'll leave you with Pablo's words below, which I hope you will take to heart! And, of course, a writing prompt . . .
Love and light,
Maureen

We’ll also learn from the work of accomplished writers. You can use the tools you’ll learn to create a family cookbook, individual essays, stories, or poems, scenes in fiction or memoir, a food blog—or just for your own
pleasure.

Each second we live is a new and unique moment of the universe, a moment that will never be again... And what do we teach our children? We teach them that two and two make four, and that Paris is the capital of France.
When will we also teach them what they are?
We should say to each of them:
Do you know what you are? You are a marvel. You are unique. In all the years that have passed, there has never been another child like you. Your legs, your arms, your clever fingers, the way you move.
You may become a Shakespeare, a Michelangelo, a Beethoven. You have the capacity for anything. Yes, you are a marvel. And when you grow up, can you then harm another who is, like you, a marvel?
You must work - we must all work - to make the world worthy of its children.

WordPlay Now! Writing Prompt
This is WordPlay—so why not revel in the power and potential of one good word after another? This week, it's "marvel."
PROMPT: Write about someone, or something, that makes you marvel.
It's fun to play with prompts in community with fellow writers, and to be able to share the results when you're done. You can find out about WordPlay classes, workshops, and retreats here.
MAUREEN RYAN GRIFFIN, an award-winning poetry and nonfiction writer, is the author of Spinning Words into Gold, a Hands-On Guide
to the Craft of Writing, a grief workbook entitled I Will Never Forget You, and three collections of poetry, Ten Thousand Cicadas Can't Be Wrong, This Scatter of Blossoms and When the Leaves Are in the Water.
She believes, as author Julia Cameron says, "We are meant to midwife dreams for one another." Maureen also believes that serious "word work" requires serious WordPlay, as play is how we humans best
learn—and perform. What she loves best is witnessing all the other dreams that come true for her clients along the way. Language, when used with intentionality and focus, is, after all, serious fuel for joy. Here's to yours!
