Volume VI, Issue 24 June 12, 2017 Dear ,
Greetings from North
Topsail Beach, where I'm savoring time with my sweet grandsons! It's so much fun to see "Baby Harry's" exuberant savoring of sun and sand.
This week's word was inspired by one of my favorite recipes in a new cookbook that's helping me to cook faster AND eat better, as well as savor new
flavors—Elegantly Simple Vegan Oil-Free Recipes by Ananth Kendapadi and Vaishnavi Vijay.
I was honored to support these two
inventive cooks in getting their healthy and elegantly simple five-ingredient recipes published.
Writing dreams and goals come in all shapes and sizes, after all! What's yours? And what flavors can you savor along the way? Upcoming WordPlay

WordPlay Success Story "[Maureen] guided us with [her] knowledge and skills,
coated with gentleness and care, and helped us in bringing our idea to life!"
Meet Ananth Kendapadi and Vaishnavi Vijay
Ananth grew up in India and moved to the United States in 1999. He works for a leading financial institution, where he is responsible for the architecture and management of several software systems.
Vaishnavi is Ananth's sister-in-law. She is from India as well and relocated to California in 2013. She is an entrepreneur currently working on a Food startup. Both Ananth and Vaishnavi have a wide-ranging set of interests, one of which is an unending fascination with new knowledge, and the curiosity to cast that knowledge in new contexts and experiment with the same.
What Ananth says about
WordPlay
"Almost ten years ago, I attended a writing workshop conducted by Maureen. I learned a lot from the workshop about
writing, and more importantly, I learned how much I did not know. I was very impressed by Maureen's commitment to the art of writing and her teaching style. I came away from the workshop with the decision that if I ever wrote a book, Maureen is the first person I need to talk to.
Fast forward many years, in
2015, I was browsing cookbooks and noticed that most of them had a lengthy list of ingredients and a lengthier description of the steps. I decided to come up with a minimalistic cookbook and teamed up with Vaishnavi. We approached Maureen and Richard and requested them to guide us through all the phases involved in transforming the concept into an actual book. They accepted, and we were very glad. After several conversations and edits, they helped us in getting the book published, and see
our vision turned into a reality. Working with Maureen and Richard was very pleasant, and both I and Vaishnavi learned a lot from our interactions with them. They guided us with their knowledge and skills, coated with gentleness and care, and helped us in bringing our idea to life!" Featured Writing

WordPlay Now! Writing
Prompt This is WordPlay—so why not revel in the power and
potential of one good word after another? This week, it's "savor."
PROMPT:
Write about an experience (food-related or otherwise) that you or a character savored. `
MAUREEN RYAN GRIFFIN, an award-winning poetry and nonfiction writer, is the author of Spinning Words into Gold, a Hands-On Guide to the Craft of Writing, a grief workbook entitled I Will Never Forget You, and three collections of poetry, Ten Thousand Cicadas Can't Be Wrong, This Scatter of Blossoms and When the Leaves Are in the Water. One of her long-held dreams came true in July of 2015 when Garrison Keillor read one of her poems on The Writer's Almanac. She believes, as author Julia Cameron says, "We are meant to midwife dreams for one another."
Maureen also believes that serious "word work" requires serious WordPlay, as play is how we humans best learn—and perform. What she loves best is witnessing all the other dreams that come true for her clients along the way. Language, when used with
intentionality and focus, is, after all, serious fuel for joy. Here's to yours! |
