Dear ,
You are officially invited to check out one of my favorite places on earth, the John C. Campbell Folk School in the North Carolina mountains. While I'd love to have you join me there for my Spinning Words into Gold writing class from May 6 -
12 (This is no hype; there really is just one spot left!), I also want to be sure you know that there is such a place, in our day and time, that brings out the best in people and offers both peace and creativity in abundance.
Because you and/or someone you love would so enjoy spending a week (or weekend) there making something. (What? I can't begin to list the many, many arts offered, from cooking to weaving to photography to jewelry-making to pottery to dulcimer-playing to nature studies to wood-turning to book arts to... You can check out the catalog here.)
I can't describe how special it is there...but I'll try, because whether or not you can come spin words into gold (the best, most appropriate place for this class of mine), I want you to know about this Folk School where people of all ages come from all over the country for "experiences in non-competitive learning and community life that are joyful and enlivening" is open
year-long.
For one thing, it's tucked in the southwestern corner of the North Carolina mountains, just two hours
from Asheville, and this is the view from the doorway into our writing studio.
And they serve three nutritious, yummy meals per day that you don't have to cook, and offer music galore, crafts demonstrations, and beauty abounding. I took this photo a few years ago on May
7th...
I've been teaching there since the early 1990's, and never grow tired of its many charms. I hope you'll check out this magical place that some people have called resident camp for grown-ups. (I agree, but the food is way better, and you sleep on beds inside buildings with hot running water!)
Let me know if you decide to sign up for a class there, now or in the future. And if you can jump and take that last
spot in my writing class (we'd get to hang out all day long!), the details are just below.
Love and light,

MAUREEN RYAN GRIFFIN, an award-winning poetry and nonfiction writer, is the author of Spinning Words into Gold, a Hands-On Guide to the Craft of Writing, a grief workbook entitled I Will Never Forget You, and three collections of poetry, Ten Thousand Cicadas Can't Be Wrong, This Scatter of Blossoms and When the Leaves Are in the Water. One of her long-held dreams came true in July of 2015 when Garrison Keillor read one of her poems on
The Writer's Almanac. You can listen to it here. She believes, as
author Julia Cameron says, "We are meant to midwife dreams for one another."
Maureen also believes that serious "word work" requires serious WordPlay, as play is how we humans best learn—and perform. What she loves best is witnessing all the other dreams that come true for her clients along the way. Language, when used with intentionality and focus, is, after all, serious fuel for joy. Here's to yours! |
